Presonus StudioLive Remote

Obama made president, England nailed the ashes, and – against all odds – someone has built an iPad app that has genuine worth within the  music industry. Truly, this is a time of miracles.

PreSonus have obviously spent a lot of time thinking about exactly how it can best make use of the touch-screen revolution that Apple is desperate for us all to embrace, and while we’re quite often a sceptical bunch, even we will admit that it sounds as though it’s struck gold with the brand new PreSonus StudioLive Remote.

It’s exactly as cool as it sounds – wireless touch-screen remote control for either of the PreSonus Studio Live series of mixers – the 16-channel model or the 24-channel offering.

It’s definitive too – every mixer channel, aux, effect, sub, Fat Channel processor – every single possible parameter you could want to change, you can, all from the one screen. Suddenly then, engineers can go on a ramble and listen to/tweak the mix from every corner, nook and cranny of their venue, and can even sit at the bar while they’re attending to frequencies. We almost worry about telling them.

Beautifully, anyone set up with an iPad and the free software – which can be downloaded from the App store – can be allowed access for aux mix editing, allowing those moaning on-stage performers to monitor themselves if necessary.

There’s an overview screen which allows you to see an all-encompassing view of the 16- or 24- channel mixers in the Studio Live range, and then individual screens to shuffle to as necessary. It’s a brilliant idea, and finally starts to shed light on quite how clever the iPad is capable of being. Good work, PreSonus!

Rob Sandall has written 507 post in this blog.

Having spent his life changing strings in guitar shops, writing and editing news and reviews of the latest music gear and gigging in admittedly-short-lived bands, Rob's particular passions lie with all things six-string and the bodger's world of home production. While he is perhaps not hugely rock and roll, his efforts as a biographer of those who are allow him to at least live a little vicariously through them, which is almost as good. Feel free to drop him a line for help, advice, or just to chat, but be warned: he does go on a bit.
