rolad-cube-80xlImproving on what’s already become an incredibly popular series of guitar amps in a relatively fast time, Roland have just confirmed the release of the new Cube XL series, announcing the separate launch of the Roland Cube-15XL, Roland Cube-20XL, Roland Cube-40XL , and Roland Cube-80XL.

Taking the portable, do-everything ethos of the original X series, the manufacturer has  added new ‘ultra-heavy COSM amp models’ – including Extreme and Metal Zone varieties. There are also updates to the effects section depending on the model purchased, including an acoustic guitar simulator and a vintage spring reverb, further adding to the unit’s potential. Onboard solo and memory functions are there too, helping the user to achieve a more comfortable live performance setup all in the one, compact case.

Roland is also quite rightly shouting about the addition of a JC-120 clean model added to each of the Cubes as the clean channel, although as customers look towards the larger members of the family they’ll find extra functionality. Below are the different specs we can expect – they’re all two or three channel, but have significant modelling differences, which separate the practice, home-use amps in the series from the full-on production moguls.

Roland Cube-15XL – 15 Watt two-channel model with 1×8″ speaker, three lead tones, and a ‘power squeezer’ (attenuation).

Roland Cube-20XL – 20 Watt two-channel model with 1×8″ speaker, six lead tones, solo boost, nine effects including spring reverb and ‘heavy octave’, ‘power squeezer’ and an onboard tuner.

Roland Cube-40XL – 40 Watt three-channel model with1x10″ speaker,  10 amp models, solo boost, memory storage, eight effects, 80-second phrase looping, ‘power squeezer’ and optional footswitch (sold separately).

Roland Cube-80XL – 80 Watt three-channel model with1x12″ speaker, 11 amp models, solo boost, memory storage, eight effects, three-band EQ, 80-second phrase looping and optional footswitch (sold separately).

Whether you’re taking an exploratory practice stance, then, or wish to make a serious impact in your solo or band performances, it’s safe to say that there’s an amp in the range for you. As you might expect, Marc will be happily putting the idea range through its paces the second they land in the office, so stand by for more on the Roland Cube-15XL, Roland Cube-20XL, Roland Cube-40XL , and Roland Cube-80XL

Having spent his life changing strings in guitar shops, writing and editing news and reviews of the latest music gear and gigging in admittedly-short-lived bands, Rob's particular passions lie with all things six-string and the bodger's world of home production. While he is perhaps not hugely rock and roll, his efforts as a biographer of those who are allow him to at least live a little vicariously through them, which is almost as good.
