Tannoy Reveal 501A, 601A and 601P monitors at Musikmesse 2010

New Tannoy Reveal studio monitors are set to be launched next week at the 2010 Musikmesse, comprising the Reveal 501A, the Reveal 601A and the Reveal 601P. The manufacturer is describing the new range as representing “the latest evolution of Tannoy’s high resolution passive and active reference monitor technology”.
The active Reveal 501A monitor is the smallest in the new range, boasting a “perfectly matched” integrated 60W power amplifier pushing a 5″ low to mid frequency driver and a “wide bandwidth” 1″ soft-dome tweeter. According to Tannoy, the result is a frequency response of 64Hz to 30kHz, an impressive performance designed to improve “phase response within the audible band” thereby preserving “the harmonic structure of sounds and the stability of the stereo image”.
The model has also been designed with smaller studios in mind, having been optimised for quarter-space near field operation, meaning users with limited space can still achieve optimum results with the monitors placed on a meter bridge or at either side of a control surface. Other features include internal bracing of the sides and rear against the back of the bass driver to deliver a clearer mid-range and tighter bass response, while the curved edged design of the monitor’s front baffle is intended to help eliminate diffraction. Similarly, a front-firing bass port has been included to avoid the exaggerated bass response that can be caused by boundary-coupling.
The Reveal 601A shares a similar construction to its smaller sibling, though it packs a little more punch with a 90W integrated power amplifier driving a 6.5″ LF/MF driver. The 1″ driver remains the same however, though the slightly higher specification does deliver a wider frequency response of 60Hz – 30kHz. Much of the cabinet’s construction is unchanged, while other features shared by all of the models in the Tannoy Reveal range include rear-mounted volume controls included for ease-of-use in home studios, particularly those focused on PC or Mac recording, balanced XLR and unbalanced jack connectors, and LED indicators to show power status.
Finally, the passive Reveal 601P is being introduced as the “Latest evolution of the original passive Reveal high definition reference monitor”, and boasts a 6.5″ mid to low driver, again working alongside a 1″ tweeter, this time delivering a frequency response of 63Hz – 30kHz. The passive model has again been optimised for quarter-space near-field operation, sharing the same construction as its stable-mates, while the manufacturer is recommending amplifier power of 50-1000W RMS.
