Win Lou Reed’s Moog Guitar in charity auction
| Posted in Guitar
Following our review of the Moog E1 guitar earlier today, guitarists around the world are being given a chance to win Lou Reed’s original Paul Vo Collector Edition Moog Guitar in a special online charity auction, which is being held in support of the Bob Moog Foundation. Entrants need only purchase a ticket for the auction for $50 to enter the draw, which will close when all of the 200 tickets up for grabs have been sold.
Lou Reed famously fell in love with the Moog Guitar on first sight when he tested the prototype version, declaring: “This is amazing….this opens the door”. The former Velvet Underground frontman went on play his own Paul Vo Collector Moog Guitar – one of only 300 models manufactured, carrying the serial number 005 – on the David Letterman US television show in 2008. That same guitar, as pictured above, has now been signed by Reed and is destined for the hands of the prize draw’s winner. Boasting a maple top in Tiger Eye flame with an ash body, a maple neck and an ebony fretboard, the guitar still has Reed’s labels for its controls intact as well as the brackets for his strap.
Nor could the proceeds of the draw be going to a better musical cause. The Bob Moog Foundation was created after Bob Moog himself passed away in 2005. The not-for-profit organisation has been set up to honour the work, legacy and the ideals of arguably the greatest pioneer of electronic music the world has known. In its words, the Foundation’s mission is threefold: “Preserving and protecting Bob Moog’s archives, creating a Student Outreach Program that brings electronic music into schools, and the creation of a Moogseum”.
The proceeds of the prize draw will go towards the expansion of the student outreach program, as explained by the Foundation’s Executive Director (and Bob Moog’s daughter), Michelle Moog-Koussa. “The Bob Moog Foundation is deeply grateful for the support of Lou Reed and Moog Music. The funds raised from this raffle will be of great assistance in expanding our Student Outreach Program, in which we bring Moog instruments in to the schools and teach children the science behind the sounds of electronic music. This program, even in its infant stages, has opened children’s minds and engaged their spirits to explore the extensive sonic possibilities that Moog instruments offer.”
Also voicing his support for the draw is Mike Adams, President of Moog Music, who is keen to point out how influential Lou Reed was in the early development of the Moog Guitar. “Our thanks to Lou Reed, who experienced the Moog Guitar in its earliest evolution and inspired us to continue our development efforts.”
To enter the draw, simply follow this link to the Foundation’s online store where the tickets can be purchased at $50 each. In the meantime, here’s a video in which Lou Reed himself plays an early Moog Guitar for the very first time.
