Peavey have announced two new hi-gain, hi-power guitar amplifier heads at NAMM, the 6534+ and the wonderfully named Butcher.

The 6534+ Plus follows in the footsteps of the hugely successful 6505 which set new standards for extreme gain and sheer power. The 6534, as its monicker suggests, is a ‘Brit’ version, utilizing EL34 tubes in the power stage for the characteristic crunch and distortion found in a certain amplifier made on this side of the pond. It still retains the hi-gain characteristics of the 6505 but is designed to generate minimum background noise levels, and delivers a massive 120 Watts into 16-, 8- or 4-ohm. Six 12 AX7 tubes provide the tonal foundation for the 6534 in the preamp. Both rhythm and lead channels include independent three-band EQ and Peavey’s own Resonance and Presence controls, designed for low and high end enhancemant. The rhythm channel also features a bright switch and a footswitchable crunch boost. There is also an effects loop and preamp out on the rear panel. The footswitch for channel changing is also included. As Peavey say: “New tubes, new tones and the same legendary power”.

The preamp section includes five 12 AX7s driving four EL34 power tubes, delivering 100 Watts into 16-, 8- or 4-ohms. A half power switch drops the output to 50 Watts. The master section offers two footswitchable master volumes for solo boosting and a patented Presence control for enhancing the extreme high frequencies. There is three-band EQ on each channel and a 12-way Punch attack on the crunch channel. Both channels feature a pre-gain boost switch and there is a MSDI mic simulated XLR direct out put for recording. Also on the rear panel is a line out with level control and an active effects loop with both send and return level controls. A four-button footswitch is included. Peavey says of this head: “Innovative versatlity and timeless brutal British tone”.

Vypyr amps are built on 32-bit, floating point SHARC technology along with Peavey’s patented TransTube circuitry creating the overdrive tones. Amp models include the Vypyr Tube 120 Head, 6505, JSX, Triple XXX, and Classic Series. Stomp box models include TubeScrm, XR Wild, X Boost, and Fuzz while rack effects modules include Tremelo, Chorus, Envelope Filter and Rotary Speaker as well as many more.
