With a history of ‘megamixing’ and generally messing about with samples and acapella’s myself, you may think I’m a fan of that 21st century audio phenomenon, the ‘Mash-Up’ – and you’d be right: that is as long as they’re done well, creatively stitched together, and contain enough passion and energy to either make the hairs on your arm stand up or make you wish you had a dancefloor to freak out on! With the affordability, accessibility and downright power of today’s music technology, every beat freakin’, DJ/Producer wannabee and ‘already there’ seasoned pro (making bespoke cut-ups & remixes for his club sets) is doin’ the Mash-Up (or ‘Bastard Pop’ as it is affectionately also called). So.. today I found out more about two guys ready to take the crown from the infamous ’2 Many DJ’s’.. Step forward, Loo and Placido

They first came to my attention about 18 months ago when I bought the ‘Mashed’ compilation CD with their ‘Horny as a Dandy’ production on it. I must admit to focusing a lot of that albums playback on the wonderful UK outfit, Go Home Productions, but most recently I caught their cool Beatle’s, Elanor Rigby reggaefied treatment which reminded me to check them out further..They’re without doubt probably at their peak right now, and easily equaling the sonic manipulation prowess of the eminent ’2 Many Dj’s’, The Streetlife DJ’s and Mark Vidler’s previously mentioned, and stunning, ‘Go Home Productions’ – What makes them any different you may ask?.. I dunno, they’ve just got such a raw vibe and elevated energy level about them 8-)

Using Rane’s Serato Scratch (incidentally now available as a package with Synergy‘s new Portman laptop) for live gigs, goodness knows what in the studio, and no doubt a mountain of vinyl, check ‘em out and download stuff at their fab website or, better still, catch them at a gig somewhere and lose it on the dancefloor!

PS: If you want to check out some more cutting edge Mash Ups on mainstream radio, I’d highly recommend XFM’s ‘The Remix-(where dance rocks!)’, with DJ Eddy Temple-Morris (DAB and Sky Digital), every Friday night, 22.00~01.00, and there’s a cool collection of classic boots ‘n mash-ups over at Good Blimey‘s website.
